TAUGHT BY Stephenie Gaustad

Yarn Finishing

Half day class, offered twice
Thursday, April 20th, 9am-noon

Friday, April 21, 2pm-5pm

Whether your yarn is single or plied, if it is fresh off the wheel, it needs finishing. If not properly set, those stresses put into the yarn while it was being made remain unrelieved. The yarn will continue to release them, often at the most inopportune moment, like at the first laundry or wearing. Each fiber has its’ own solution to establishing a calm workable and balanced yarn. Besides establishing a predicable, non-lively, workable yarn, further finishing processes can raise a nap or apply a temporary (washes out) stabilizer in order to use singles for knitting or weaving.

Materials fee: $5

Class Level: any

STUDENTS SHOULD BRING

  • -6 skeins of unset handspun wool yarn, any size, any length
  • a sacrificial hair or nail brush (after you finish using it in class, it will be full of fuzzies)
  • 2-3 empty bobbins
  • niddy noddy
  • lazy kate
  • pen/pencil.
  • Note to those who are not traveling too far: A reel or umbrella swift, and bobbin winder would be really handy in class.
