Bast fibers are simple and mysterious and this class will help you uncover their mysteries and get a handle on these humble fibers. Bast fibers and are very different fiber from other fibers and thus we will discuss how we handle it differently and how we adjust our wheels to accommodate the long fiber. We will study and work with several different preparations of both fibers, from the short to long. Each will be dealt with separately using different techniques of spinning. A demonstration of preparing a distaff with line flax will be done in class. Students will be taking home their finished sample of both of singles and plied bast yarns. After a full day you’ll know how to adjust your wheel for bast spinning, all about the hemp and flax preparations available, techniques for spinning hemp and flax, some history of hemp and the possibility of it making a comeback into popular culture, and how to spin and store your yarns.

Level: Must be comfortable with the wheel and spinning singles but no experience with bast fibers needed.
