Spinning Cotton, a beginning

Friday, April 22nd Full day

9-5 (with 12-2 break)

(check out the continuing cotton class on Saturday if you’ve already taken a cotton foundation class, want to continue learning after this class, or already know about spinning cotton but want to go further).

This fun and fast class is an introduction to cotton spinning and is designed to give you an understanding of both cotton and how/why to adjust your wheel for this fine, short staple fiber. You’ll learn how to card and make punis from solar dyed ginned cotton.  You will not only learn to spin from a puni but also proper techniques for spinning all kinds of cotton fiber. Spinning off the cottonseed to cotton sliver will be covered as time allows.

Materials fee: $30

Skill Level: Spinner must be able to able to keep their wheel spinning clockwise consistently.

STUDENTS SHOULD BRING

  • Spinning wheel in good working condition (no bulk spinners or bobbin-led wheels please, wheels should have at least a 12/2 ratio and not have an auto-winder)
  • Lazy Kate
  • at least 3 bobbins
  • Niddy Noddy
  • Dark lap cloth

Optional

  • Wheel maintenance kit
  • Hand carders (cotton preferred but wool acceptable) if you have them
