Silk: the temptress unravelled!

2 Day Class
Thursday, April 16th & Friday, April 17th

Artisans have been unravelling the mysteries of silk throughout time. Participants in this class will reel silk cocoons using traditional tools for spinning.   They will learn drafting and spinning techniques for all types and preparations of silk available to hand spinners today, from hankies, silk waste, muga, eri, to the finest mulberry silk.  Participants will blend silk with other exotic fibres to create luxurious yarns.

Materials fee: $50 – includes class handout, silk cocoons, at least 10 different varieties and preparations of silk fibre, and a variety of exotic fibres for blending exercises.

Skill Level: Beginner & Above

STUDENTS SHOULD BRING

  • Bring your wheel and all its parts, even the ones you don’t use
  • Bring a ball winder and a swift if you have them
  • Niddy noddy
  • Handcards –cotton ones if you have them
  • Combs if you have them
  • I’ll bring a variety of equipment, including a drum carder for us to share.
