TAUGHT BY Stephenie Gaustad

Getting to Know Flax and Friends

Full Day Class
Wednesday, April 19th
9am-5pm with 12pm-2pm break

Flax, ramie and hemp share similar characteristics: fine luster, maximum strength, high abrasion resistance. Spend a day with them. Learn to appreciate their unique features and see what it takes to “handle” them. They do not respond to the same cues as protein fibers. Twist is set in the cellulosics differently. They are boiled in the skein.  Learn to appreciate their unique features.  Take an opportunity to include bast fibers in your spinners kip.

A note on spinning devices: choose a wheel that can be adjusted for generous take up with modest twist. A hefty spindle can perform better than some small electric spinners. You have a choice if you bring both.

Material Fee: $20

Level: can spin a single and ply

STUDENTS SHOULD BRING

  • A functional wheel or spindle with which you are comfortable
  • oil for the wheel
  • pen/pencil and notebook.
