TAUGHT BY LIZ GIPSON

Choosing Yarns for Weaving

Half day class – taught twice:

Saturday, April 18th – 9am-noon

Saturday, April 18th – 2-5pm

Selecting yarns for weaving is a bit of a conundrum for the new weaver. The average spinner already has a leg up in this department, as you are curious about how yarn is made and are gathering the vocabulary to discuss it. In this class, you will learn how to think about choosing yarns for warp and weft including structure, size, fiber type, and color. Students will get hands-on experience choosing yarns and weaving a small swatch, the best way to learn if your choices are heading in the right direction. Swatching is a powerful tool for weavers, because unlike knitting, we can’t rip out our work and recoup the yarn. There will also be tips for what to do when you think you may have a warp that has gone wrong.

Materials fee: $25 – includes loom rental, yarns, and handouts.

Experience Level: Beginner and Above

STUDENTS SHOULD BRING

Looms and yarns will be provided. Scissors, tape measure, and tapestry needle optional. Students are encouraged to bring handspun they would like feedback on or would like to swatch.
