This workshop is designed for those who want to know all about cotton spinning and how to use hand spun cotton yarns. Beginning with growing to processing, to spinning, to finishing a project with cotton, all these things will be covered in this comprehensive, fascinating course.
Day 1: CARDING & SPINNING COTTON
The first day will be busy learning how to card cotton properly and blending dyed and natural colors to create designer punis for spinning. The spinning wheel is the tool we will be using for spinning and thus time will be spent learning all about your wheel and adjusting it so it is ready to spin this short staple fiber. Students will learn the basic techniques of spinning cotton and will be making cotton thread from their punis. As ready, cotton bolls and prepared sliver will be introduced.
Day 2: SPINNING AND PREPARING YARN FOR A PROJECT
Plying is a major part of cotton yarn so this will be a major focus of the day. Students are encouraged to bring their pre-spun cotton if they have some (not required at all). We will evaluate it and show how it can be re-spun if it isn’t balanced. We will talk about the use of cotton handspun for weaving, knitting or crocheting. Students are welcome to bring their knitting needles and crochet hooks to use to make samples during class time. A sample warp will be made for a small scarf on a rigid heddle loom. With the help of the instructor the day will also include lots of spinning yarns students want for a given project.
Day 3: MORE SPINNING AND USING YOUR HANDSPUN COTTON YARN
More spinning, finishing, lots of discussion, and ample time for asking questions and finishing sample projects. Each spinner will have a chance to weave with his or her handspun directly from the wheel. At the end of the day all the samples will be discussed and scarf removed from the loom.
