April 29, Saturday – 1 Day Class
Keep it wild with Maja from Iceland by maintaining the texture of the icelandic fleece in singles yarns. Be inspired by the beauty of the raw fleece and the image of the courageous Icelandic highland sheep.
We will be working with different quality raw Icelandic fleeces and spinning without preparation or minimal preparation, straight from the fleece – adjusting our spinning style to the raw material and the desired outcome and project. Students will get some background information on the history and reality of sheep farming in Iceland, its wool industry and commercial yarns, the thel and tog, and last but not least work with hand picked high quality hand spinners’ fleeces. We will draw inspiration from pictures and tales of Icelandic sheep in the highlands. We will try and capture the beauty of the fleece and translate it into our yarns. From working with a lambs fleece and spinning moderately textured yarn lopi style we will go through several variations of textured yarn to a long lock ewe fleece and even some extreme lock spinning.
Materials fee $35
• Spinning wheel in good working order (there will be a lot of stop and go spinning; electric might not work well) with a bobbin
• A large orifice and/or art yarn set-up if possible but if not, we can work around it
• Hooks on your flyer might be troublesome when lock spinning but will work for less textured versions.
